On the April 3rd  by the initiative of the Department of Internationalization of Educational Activities (IEA) and with promotion of  Students’ club of linguistic and cultural studies “Travel Office”  was organized an event for the faculties of IFSK and ELIT which was entitled "International mobility: how does it work?". The Interest was expressed both by students of these faculties and by lecturers of the Department of Germanic Philology: Olena Nazarenko, Svitlana Yermolenko, Antonina Chepeliuk, Anna Zinchenko, Iryna Ushchapovska and others.

On March 15th the awarding ceremony of the winners of the annual poetry and literary translation competition Alter Ego was held.  The competition was organized by the SSU Department of Germanic Philology for the seventh time (responsible was the assistant professor, candidate of Philological Sciences Olena Yemelianova), and student conference on the results of teaching practice (responsible was senior lecturer of Department of Germanic Philology Antonina Chepeliuk).

On March 21-22, the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv hosted the II stage of the contest for the best scientific students’ works in natural, technical and humanitarian sciences in “Translation” specialty. 4th-year students of specialty translation, Marharyta Polupan and Yulia Lazutkina were invited to represent their research papers in front of the members of the commission. It should be said that the scientific papers had been highly appreciated by the commission members during the first stage of the contest and both students were awarded diplomas “For Scientific Discussion Skills” (Marharyta Polupan) and “For Oratory” (Yulia Lazutkina).

The IX All-Ukrainian student scientific-practical conference "Translational innovations" was held on the basis of the department of Germanic philology

The proceedings of the conference include the works of the representatives of 4 higher educational institutions, namely: Sumy State University (Sumy); Shota Rustaveli State University (Batumi, Georgia), Kyiv National Linguistic University (Kyiv) and Gumilyov Eurasian National University (Astana, Kazakhstan). As usual pupils of Sumy schools also participated in the conference.

Starting from March 6, 2019 Professor Joseph Kush, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, who works at the Department of Germanic Philology, Sumy State University under the Fulbright Scholar Program, invites everyone to attend the Course in Academic Writing. Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 15: 00 to 16: 20, Room ET-216.

On February 21st, in the room ET-122, a small excursion to poetic Poland took place with the assistance of candidate of technical sciences, associate professor of the Department of Electronics and Computer Technology and teacher of the Latin language - Oleksandr Kobyakov. The head of students’ club of linguistic and cultural studies "Travel Office" Olena Nazarenko gathered 1st and 3rd year students of the specialization «Translation» who were interested in the alternative attitude to this country.

During February-March lecturer of the Department of Germanic Philology Olena Nazarenko and fourth-year students Vitalina Zaiika, Oksana Klepalska, Kateryna Podvalna, Bohdan Bilous and Dmytro Sheludko worked closely with pupils of the city.

The lecturer and the students organized and conducted “Translator in present-day word” tour, dedicated to the week of the Faculty of Foreign Philology and Social Communications, demonstrating high school graduates from Sumy schools and gymnasia technical and educational opportunities provided by SSU for future translators. Visitors were able to take on the role of translators in language labs, listen and participate in the class on practice of translation in the lecture room, learn new idioms and peculiarities of American and British English.

The student  Kristina Dreval  was one of the 10 students to have received the Eastern Institute (Foundation Institute for Eastern Studies) scholarship.

The main requirements were to have a certificate of proficiency in English at B2 level and above and average grades for a period of study not lower than 4.5. “We give you the money to stimulate your diligence at studying” – said Jacek Kluczkowski, former ambassador of Poland to Ukraine. On March, 1st 10 students of Sumy State University received certificates for scholarships.

In order to carry out a professional and high-quality evaluation of electronic versions of textbooks in English and German during January-February 2019,  associate professor, candidate of Philological Sciences Olena Yemelyanova  and associate professor,  candidate of Philological Sciences Larysa Shchihlo were elected to be experts by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

Yulia Lazutkina, a student of the Department of Germanic Philology (group PR-51) has taken part in the 2019 Camp EXCITE Teachers Training on the theme of Student Empowerment, which was organized by Center for Euroinitiatives in Sumy.
