“ECONOMICS FOR ECOLOGY” conference (EU practices in the field of education for sustainable development)

On 14-17 May 2024, the International scientific and practical online conference "ECONOMICS FOR ECOLOGY" (EU practices in the field of education for sustainable development) was held in Sumy. The conference is organized within the Jean Monet module "Fostering EU Practices of Education for Sustainable Development through the Brand Language: Interdisciplinary Studies" of the EU Erasmus+ program (101085708-ERASMUS-JMO-2022-HEI-TCH-RSCH) headed by Iryna Ushchapovska.

New achievements at the Department of Germanic Philology

The Department of Germanic Philology congratulates Oksana Brovkina (PhD in Philology, senior lecturer) on being awarded the academic title of Associate Professor! The official presentation of diplomas took place on 9 May 2024 at Sumy State University during the Academic Board meeting.

Lectures and practical classes within the course "Sustainable Linguistics"

In September-December 2023, Iryna Ushchapovska (PhD in Philology, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Germanic Philology at Sumy State University) conducted a series of lectures and practical classes within the course "Sustainable Linguistics" for first-year Master's students majoring in Philology. The course was taught in English. Sustainable Linguistics is concerned with the preservation of language as the basis around which we build our lives. It is a symbolic space that shelters us. Sustainable linguistics explores preservation and maintenance of language and its ethnolinguistic vitality.

Virtual Meeting with the Travel Office

On 30 April 2024, Olena Nazarenko (a lecturer at the Department of Germanic Philology) invited Oleksandra Hnibida (a founder and director of Smart School, stakeholder, Philology graduate) for the Travel Office meeting. The visitors were students and department members (Oksana Brovkina, Anna Zinchenko, Antonina Prokopenko, Olena Ovsianko, Olena Emelianova, and Maryna Chernyk). Oleksandra graduated from Sumy State University in 2012. She studied foreign languages and translation. Emphasized that language proficiency significantly impacted her path to success. Began her career as an English language tutor. Later, opened her clothing store, but eventually returned to education.

English academic writing for researchers

Mariia Rudenko (a PhD in Philology student) took an English academic writing course "AgriSciences Platform for Development of Science in Ukrainian Higher Education Institutions". It was supported by the Czech University of Science and Technology. The course lasted 6 weeks on the Canvas platform. It was aimed at developing academic writing skills and preparing a scientific article in English for publication in indexed journals.

Acknowledgments from the Sumy Oblast State Administration

Halyna Chulanova (associate professor) was acknowledged for her qualitative work as a jury member in the subject "The English Language" during the II Stage of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad among vocational and technical institutions in 2023-2024. There was another achnowledgement from the Department of Education and Science of the Sumy Oblast State Administration for high-qualitative work a jury member of the project competition on the subject "The English Language" among vocational and technical institutions in 2023-2024.

The department invites to acquire the Master's degree

On 27 April 2024, Sumy State University hosted a student forum "Admission to the Master's degree: An easy choice". The event participants were representatives of various institutes and faculties. The main forum goal is to discuss Master's benefits and help students to make a choice.

Conference "Social and Humanitarian Aspects of Modern Society Development"

On 25 April 2024, the XI All-Ukrainian Scientific Conference of Students, Postgraduates and Teachers "Social and Humanitarian Aspects of Modern Society Development" was held at the IFSK Faculty. Reports were presented by SumDU students, undergraduates, postgraduates and teachers, as well as guests from other higher education institutions. Foreign students from Africa also prepared reports. One of them was related to a comparative study of life values and ideals in Ukraine and Western Europe. It emphasized the traditions that play an important role in preserving the spiritual values of each nation.

Open Door Day: From "speed dating" to true love

On 20 April 2024, Sumy State University held the Open Door Day. This year's event had an unusual format - applicants got acquainted with the specialties in the form of "speed dating". The IFSK faculty also made future students fall in love with their specialties. The event was attended by pupils of the 10th-11th grades, college students and parents. During the "quick dates", applicants could personally communicate with representatives of the graduating departments and learn more about the choice of future specialty, admission requirements, study benefits, and modern educational opportunities.

Translation in practice

Maryna Chernyk, a lecturer at the Department of Germanic Philology, translated into English the publication "Art Collection of Sumy State University". The authors of the works collected in the gallery are prominent artists from Ukraine, Poland, Switzerland, and Croatia. But most of the collection is composed of works by artists of Sumy Oblast.

Anna Reshytko (a PhD student of the Department of Germanic Philology) successfully passed the competition and was selected as one of the best students for the BUP 8th «Interdisciplinary-Multicultural-International» internship, organized by the Center for PhD Students from the Baltic Region. The conference was held on November 24-28 in the town of Lodz, Poland. Young researchers from 12 European countries took part in it.

Anna represented her thesis and had an internship in the interdisciplinary scientific cooperation. The young scientist was consulted by leading European experts and got a diploma.
