On 30 Spetember 2021 (International Translation Day), the Department of Germanic Philology held a lecture "Literary Translation: Adequacy vs Style. Plagiarism in Translated Works".

Students learned difficulties of rendering fiction books, namely when there is a need to keep a balance between original adequacy and stylistical correctness. That is done to provide author's communicative effect for target audience. 

A vivid example to analyze adequacy and style were novels about Harry Potter and their popular translations within markets of Ukraine and Sumy in 2000-2021.

Thanks to the lecture, students concluded that adequacy is not the main translation requirement. In terms of fiction, style prevails: while adequacy is high, translations will not be loved and valued by readers if their style is poor.

Besides, difference between plagiarism and non-plagiarism in fiction was discussed. In particular, an issue of recognizing them among translated works was focused on.
