On March 14, students of specialty «Philology» and lecturers of the Department of Germanic Philology Olena Medvid, Galyna Chulanova and Olena Nazarenko attended an online meeting with an experienced freelance translator Mrs. Lillian Hunter, who has lived in London for many years and is engaged in her favorite business.

During the meeting, Mrs Hunter shared her advice in the form of a small presentation for young translators, in which she noted the following aspects:
1. The translator must take into account the cultural peculiarities of the work and always remain neutral.
2. If possible, set a deadline for the next day (because often the translator does not have time to make a translation in 2-3 hours), so as not to disappoint the customer.
3. It is important to have your workplace equipped with a large screen computer (so as not to spoil your sight), the necessary part is also a printer and shredder.
4. Go your own way: gain experience, make a resume, be professional, officially insured and work with responsible agencies.
5. For comfortable work it is necessary to install MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Anti-Virus, ABBYY Lingvo (electronic dictionary).
At the end of the meeting, students put a lot of questions to the speaker:
◦ Which topic of the text is the most difficult to translate?
This, apparently, the terminology, and especially legal one, is very difficult to translate. And other specialized terms, if they are needed for your text.
◦ Why did you choose translation?
Because it's mine, everyone is closer to something and likes it more. My choice was this.
◦ How many pages do you translate per day?
It depends on the type of the text and its complexity. The norm for me is 5,000 words a day.
◦ What advice would you give to future translators?
My presentation is all my advice for you. I would also like to wish you good luck, good experience and hard work, because this is the only way to achieve your goal!
