Master students of specialty Philology, Marharyta Turchyna and Yuliia Lazutkina, who became participants of XVII Eastern Winter School, had a chance to visit the Homeland of Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin and Henryk Sienkiewicz – Poland, a country with a vibrant folklore and ancient history. The educational process lasted from February 28 till March 14 at the University of Warsaw. For both girls, it was the first trip abroad and it left on them a deep impression. Of course, only the best ones!

The Хth All-Ukrainian students’ scientific conference «Translation Innovations» , scheduled on March 20th-21st, 2020 by the Department of Germanic Philology of Sumy State University, was held distantly. The proceedings of the conference include the works of 96 participants, among them there are representatives of 6 higher educational institutions of such cities as Sumy, Kyiv, Lutsk, Zaporizhzhia, Batumi (Georgia), as well as the students of Sumy specialized school of I – III degrees №7 and Sumy regional gymnasium boarding school for talented and creatively gifted children.

On the occasion of holding the X All-Ukrainian students’ scientific conference "Translation Innovations", on March 20-21th, the Department of Germanic Philology and experts from employers board in specialization "Translation" have created a professional portrait of specialists, who are translators by vocation. Our investigation was held on the occasion of 25th anniversary of the speciality "Philology" ("Translation") of SumDU.
The Department of Germanic Philology of SumDU had prepared approximately 4000 qualified degreed specialists and created the translational community of Slobozhanshchina. The transnational group in this region is represented by 3 professional groups - freelancers, the office of translators and staff translators, for whom online quiz about each of market sectors was made.

We are very proud that the creation of specialty «Translation» 25 years ago has given the impetus to the development of humanitarian pillar at SumDU. So nowadays we have an incredible result of mutual persistent, thorough, creative and interesting work!

 Methodological materials for distance learning:

In March 2020, the annual poetry and literary translation competition Alter Ego was held by the Department of Germanic Philology of SumDU for the ninth time.  The winners of Alter Ego competition were awarded in 4 nominations, namely: poems in Ukrainian, literary translations from English and German, poems in English or German. This year more than 140 works by authors, students and pupils from all over Ukraine from Prykarpattia to Slobozhanshchyna have been sent to the competition.
The jury traditionally included Iryna Kobyakova - PhD in Philogy, Professor (head of the jury), Svitlana Shvachko - Doctor of Philology, Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology, Nataliia Tatsenko - Doctor of Philology, Associate professor, Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology and other representatives of the Department of the Germanic Philology.

The students Dariia Oliynyk and Veronika Orol had their pedagogical practice under the supervision of the senior lecturer Larysa Dehtiarova at the Department of Germanic Philology in the group PR-71/1.
The topic of the classes was "Theater und Kinokunst". On February 24th the trainees prepared extracurricular activities. At the end of the topic, students represented their creative skills and showed a performance in German.

The teaching staff of the Department of Germanic Philology actively presented their research works at the All-Ukrainian Scientific-Practical Conference «Synergy in Philological Researches» at the Zaporizhzhia National University and at the XIV International Scientific and Practical conference «Languages and the World: Research and Teaching» at Volodymyr Vynnychenko Central Ukrainian State Pedagogical University, Kropyvnytskyi city.

Conferences Programmes

As a part of the career oriented activities, the lecturer of the Department of Germanic Philology, Nataliia Prykhodko, along with the students of the group PR-64, Mykhailo Trypolskyi, Ilona Kupavka and the student of the group PR-63 Vladyslav Zarva, held meetings with the high school students of Sumy schools No 6 and 17.
The students shared their own experience of obtaining profession of a translator, described the advantages of studying at SumDU and invited the high school students to the Department to acquaint them further with the specifics of the translator profession.

The first-year students-translators Yuliia Husenko, Alina Serdiuk, Anna Chudnivets, Karyna Vedmydera and Hlafira Mazur took part in the conference “First Step to Science”, that took place in the Conference Hall of Sumy State University, on February 23.
The students prepared their reports, led by the senior lecturers of the department of Germanic philology , Iryna Ushchapovska  and Alla Krasulia. The young scientists told about main points of the comparative and historical linguistics, the highlights of structuralism as historical linguistics, the theory of information in linguistics, the perception and verbalization of non-verbal codes of space, time, and silence in different national and cultural environments and the molodogramatysm as the main trend in linguistics in 19th-20th centuries.
