A future interpreter on the sleep guard

Kateryna Haivoronska, a third-year Philology student (PR-11), took part in the workshop "PedSmart Sleep" as an interpreter from German into Ukrainian and from Ukrainian into German. This event was for physicians and everyone interested in sleep problems, considering the psycho-traumatic impact of the ongoing war.

Poetry Week at the Department of Germanic Philology

Anna Zinchenko (a lecturer at the Department of Germanic Philology) together with Philology students implemented a creative poetry project "I", It consisted of two parts: creation of a poetic work and experiments with visual forms of presentation. The project aimed not only to introduce students to a poetic work. They also tried to express themselves through it in other languages (English and German). Thematically, the project focused on self-identification and self-analysis. Students tried to find answers to important personal questions and express them by experimenting with the visual representation of poetry.

All-Ukrainian English Olympiad

In March 2024, the second stage of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in academic subjects among students of vocational education institutions in 2023-2024 was held in eight academic subjects, including foreign languages.  The event was aimed at identifying, supporting and developing the creative potential of students, as well as preparing them for final examinations.

The stakeholder and owner of the Study and Go School met philology students

On 12 March 2024, the Travel Office (under the guidance of Olena Nazarenko) organized an exciting online event for philology students. The guest was Valeriia Holovanova (a department graduate, stakeholder and owner of the Study and Go School). She shared her study experience and useful advice with the students.

Results of "Alter Ego-2023"

On 15 March 2024, Sumy State University hosted an awarding ceremony for the winners of the poetry translation contest "Alter Ego". It was held by the Department of Germanic Philology at Sumy State University. Winners were determined in 4 nominations, namely: poems in Ukrainian, poetic translations from English and German, poems in English or German. It should be noted that this year more than 145 works were sent to the competition by authors – students and pupils from all corners of Ukraine (from Prykarpattia to Slobozhanshchyna).

Department lecturers evaluated participants of the Ukrainian Junior Academy of Sciences

Department members took part in the judging a competition. It dealt with defense of research works by members of the Ukrainian Junior Academy of Sciences. Associate Professors Larysa Shchyhlo and Diana Movchan worked in the jury of the German Language and Literature Section.

Jumanji: The philologist path

On 9 March 2024, the Department of Germanic Philology held a meeting with applicants. During the meeting, schoolchildren had an opportunity to learn about the peculiarities of admission and study in the 035 Philology specialty at Sumy State University. In addition, everybody had an opportunity to complete the game quest "Jumanji: The philologist path". Divided into teams, they overcame obstacles - interesting English exercises with questions about the specialty and the department - to reach the winning location! A philology graduate won a literary contest

Pavlo Zinchenko, a philology graduate of Sumy State University, became the winner of the short story contest "Thirty" with his work "Morning News" (February 2024). Pavlo began to admire poetry and prose still at school. Studying at the Department of Germanic Philology only contributed to the development of his literary skills. Philology student's achievements have been presented at an international conference

Anzhelika Kalchenko (PR-11 philology student) under the guidance of Oksana Brovkina (senior lecturer at the Department of Germanic Philology) took part in the ХI International Scientific and Practical Conference “Innovative Solutions to Modern Scientific Challenges”. It was held on 21-23 February 2024 in Zagreb, Croatia. Anzhelika presented her work “Argot: Case of Polari”.

May I choose? What? When? How?

On 29 February 2024, the Department of Germanic  Philology hosted a meeting with the guarantors of the curriculum "Germanic Languages and Literatures (Translation Included), English as the First the Language" for the bachelors, masters and PhD students. Svitlana Baranova, Iryna Kobiakova and Nataliia Tatsenko spoke. They talked about ensuring a students' right to form individual educational trajectories.

  • 1975-1988 – lecturer, the Department of English Language, Sumy Pedagogical Institute;
  • 1990-1995 – Head of the Department of English Language, Sumy Pedagogical Institute;
  • 1995-2000 – Head of the Translation Department of Sumy State University;
  • 2000-2008 – senior lecturer, the Department of Translation Theory and Practice of Sumy State University;
  • 2008-2015 – Head of the Department of Translation Theory and Practice of Sumy State University. Professor Shvachko S.O. headed this department till 2015.
  • Now she is Professor at the Department of Germanic Philology.

S.O. Shvachko trained in the United Kingdom and the USA. She is an honorary member of the Theodore Roosevelt School (San Antonio, Texas). She was nominated twice (by American Bibliographic Institute) as the Woman of the Year.

In 2012, she had an internship at V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.
